Course Description: “Cultural competency, which includes linguistic and contextual competence, is recognized as an important strategy for improving the quality of care provided to individuals from diverse backgrounds. Cultural and contextual competency is a lifelong practice of self-reflection and commitment that requires cultural humility.” This program aims to promote the attitudes and beliefs, knowledge, and skills required to respectfully and effectively engage and serve a culturally diverse population.

Course Objectives:

  • Explain culture, cultural identity, and cultural intersectionality
  • Identify three (3) examples of personal bias that a clinician may have
  • Identify two (2) common cognitive biases
  • Identify three (3) culturally influenced stigmas that may create barriers for individuals seeking health services
  • Define “microaggression,” “microassault,” “microinsult,” and “microinvalidation,” and give an example of each
  • Define stereotypes and provide an example
  • Define cultural identity and diversity
  • Distinguish microculture, macroculture, affiliations, and social identities
  • Identify one (1) example of cultural interactions
  • Distinguish the differences between cultural pluralism, assimilation, integration, and acculturation
