Exploring Mental Health, Suicidality, and How to Help

Course Description: This training educates the participant on the definitions of mental health, mental wellness, common mental health diagnoses, suicide and related terms. Foundational information such as language and communication are covered in addition to contemporary statistics about suicide, including those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The signs and symptoms of one who is presenting along the continuum of suicide are addressed. Suicide prevention and intervention are reviewed in an in-depth manner to assist participant in handling situations they may experience.  Finally, information related to stress and the importance of self-care is provided.

Course Objectives:

1. Define mental health, mental illness, mental wellness and common mental health diagnoses related to suicidality including suicide, ideation, and suicide attempt.
2. Increase knowledge related to the components of suicidality (statistics, warning signs, etc.).
3. Learn how to respond to someone with suicidal thoughts, plans or intentions to include assessment tools, crisis planning content, and available resources for someone who is affected.
4. Learn at least two interventions to use when responding to one with suicidal thoughts, plans or intentions.
5. Identify 3 ways to increase self-care and reduce day-to-day stress.
