The Culture of Law Enforcement & The Identity of The Law Enforcement Officer

Course Description: This course will describe law enforcement as a culture by identifying the unique beliefs and values generally held by individuals employed as law enforcement officers; the law enforcement officer’s way of living as it is informed by historical, economic, ecological, and political forces; and the law enforcement officer’s concept of self.

This course will empower helping professionals to achieve more positive behavioral health outcomes when working with the law enforcement population through improved cultural competence and informed application of ACA ethics. 

Course Objectives:

After completing this continuing education activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify (3) aspects of the culture of Law Enforcement Officers
  • Describe (3) aspects of the identity of Law Enforcement Officers
  • Identify (3) barriers Law Enforcement Officers may encounter when seeking help, specifically for counseling and/or therapy
  • Identify (3) considerations for mental health professionals to achieve more positive outcomes when working with Law Enforcement Officers
